Eminem used his music to escape his life of poverty in Detroit, and his unstable family life - his father left when he was 2 and his favourite uncle committed suicide when he was 19. The following year, in 1992, he signed to his first record label. During this time he ranked highly in several competitions - including 2nd place in the Rap Olympics, which landed him a record deal with Interscope.
His first studio album, Slim Shady LP , went triple platinum within a year of its release - and with production by Dr Dre , are you surprised? His next album, Marshall Mathers LP , sold 1.76 million copies in its first week of release! The albums following this release also did well in the charts - The Eminem Show , Encore , Relapse and, his latest release, Recovery , all hit number 1 in America and here in the UK.
But Slim Shady didn't just stick to a career in music, his acting debut came in 8 Mile - a 2002 movie about a young rapper trying to make it in Detroit (sound familiar?)
With a 'best of' album (Curtain Call ) being released in December 2005, it looked like the end of Eminem's music career... But last year he made an amazing come back, and his music in 2010 is just as fresh as it was a decade ago!
