| If there's one artist which, in recent years, has shaken up the UK music scene it's this man - Dizzee Rascal . Bringing genres such as grime, garage and ragga in to the mainstream, Dizzee did the impossible, and for this reason, he's this week's artist featured in Choice Classics ! |
Dizzee headlined the Lovebox festival in Victoria on Friday, and his performances at Glastonbury and The Summertime Ball got thousand of people jumping! This year alone he's barely disappeared from the charts, but how did it all begin?
Back in 2002, Dylan Kwabena Mills took the stage name Dizzee Rascal and joined The Roll Deep Crew (who had a number 1 this year with 'Good Times ') with his mentor, Wiley . In 2003 he released his debut solo album 'Boy In Da Corner ' which won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize - becoming the youngest artist to ever do so, aged just 19!
His 2004 album 'Showtime ' and 2007's 'Maths + English ' had better success than his debut, but it wasn't until he released 'Tongue 'n' Cheek ' until the number 1s started rolling in...
With 'Dance Wiv Me ', 'Bonkers ', 'Holiday ' and 'Dirtee Disco ' all hitting the top spot, Dizzee became the record breaker for having the most number 1 singles from one album. Maybe it's this fame and success that makes him one of the most recognised faces in the UK music scene today? He's even appeared on Newsnight to talk about politics, and "Mr Rascal" might even run for Prime Minister ! (He'd get our vote!)
So far 2010 has been a great year for Dizzee, he won the Best International Artist at the 2010 BET Awards and Solo Male Artist at the BRITS . We're looking forward to what he's gonna do next (as long as it's not another football song!)
