Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys - Choice Classics

She may have just celebrated her wedding to Swizz Beatz, but we're sure Alicia Keys will be even happier being placed into our very own hall of fame! The 29 year old songstress from New York has had an amazing career spanning the best part of a decade.

She was born to a white mother and black father in the Hell's Kitchen area of New York (and no Gordon Ramsay in sight) and began her love affair with music aged 7. She played classical music on the piano and attended top of her class at the Professional Performing Arts School. She lasted 4 weeks at university before dropping out to pursue her music career - and what a great decision that was!

Before her break in to the charts, she wrote songs for movie soundtracks (Men In Black, Shaft and Dr Dolittle 2). It wasn't until she took the stage name Alicia Keys (it's easier to type than Alicia Augello Cook) and she released the incredible Fallin' in 2001 - it spent 6 weeks at #1 in the States and went on to win Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song at the 2001 Grammys! Her debut album, Songs In A Minor, went straight to the top of the Billboard charts and went on to sell over 12 million copies worldwide!

Her second album, The Diary of Alicia Keys, also did amazingly well, selling over 9 million copies.

The success of Fallin' wasn't matched until No One in 2007, taken from her 3rd album - As I Am.

Not only does this NYC girl have an amazing voice, she's also got a huge heart. She is the co-founder and ambassador for Keep A Child Alive, a non-profit organization which helps African families suffering from HIV/AIDS. She often donates large sums to charities, including Frum Tha Ground Up, providing scholarships for un-privileged children and teenagers.

2009/10 has seen Alicia collaborate with some of the greats - including Beyoncé and Jay-Z for the massive Empire State of Mind. She even made a Bond theme! It's also the time that she tied the knot to Swizz Beats in Corsica and she announced that she was expecting her first child - she's already been an amazing artist, looks like she's set to be an amazing mum too!
