Singer Wyclef Jean is considering whether to run for president of Haiti, his family have said.
Jean was appointed Haiti's ambassador-at-large in 2007
The former Fugee recently confirmed he intended to be involved in the November 28 election, but stopped short of confirming his candidacy.
But a statement issued by his family has rekindled speculation he will announce his bid for office before the August 7 deadline.
"Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless," his family said.
"And he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward.
"If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately."
Outgoing president Rene Preval cannot seek re-election as head of the quake-ravaged nation, prompting claims Jean could come forward.
The singer promoted humanitarian efforts amid last year's disaster
Dozens of candidates are expected to declare themselves in the race to reign in the hemisphere's poorest country.
Jean, who was appointed ambassador-at-large for the Caribbean nation in 2007, is thought to be undecided as to whether to seek a five-year term.
The 37-year-old's path to the presidency would be paved with difficulties in a nation renowned for contentious elections marred by violence.
To enter the race, he would have to prove he has resided in Haiti for five consecutive years, own property in the country and have never been a citizen of any country other than Haiti.
Although born on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, Jean left as a child and grew up in Brooklyn, New York.
