Jailed Lohan Set To Have Sentence Slashed

Actress Lindsay Lohan reacts to her jail sentence beside her lawyer in Beverly Hills, California.

Hollywood star Lindsay Lohan's 90-day jail term is likely to be slashed to just two weeks because of prison overcrowding, say police.

The troubled actress was locked up in a women's jail in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday for breaking her parole, following a 2007 drink-driving conviction.

But no sooner had the 24-year-old been booked into Lynwood correctional facility but LA police said her sentence would probably be reduced.

LA County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said: "She is scheduled to be released on either August 1 or 2 for overcrowding issues and good behaviour."

Lohan had attended a Beverly Hills court hearing before being taken to prison in handcuffs.

TV helicopters had chased the police car she was travelling in, before it disappeared through the gates of the prison on the southern outskirts of LA.

The facility has hosted several female celebrities, including socialites Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez and reality TV star Khloe Kardashian.

But life in Lynwood will have none of the luxuries usually available to Lohan, who was a child actress and considered a serious star-in-the-making before becoming known chiefly for partying.

Initially, she would have been searched and made to wear a jail-issued jumpsuit.

She would also have been given a set of simple toiletries, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a comb, deodorant, shampoo and shaving implements.

The Sun said the "grim first meal" for the Mean Girls movie actress was turkey, served with apple sauce, broccoli and coleslaw, with a glass of milk.

Experts said wardens would carefully protect Lohan from the kind of violence common behind bars.

Police said "people with notoriety are kept away" from the general jail population for security reasons.

Provided Lohan behaves in prison, she will be out well ahead of the September premier of her latest film, the action thriller Machete.

The actress, who starred in the 1998 film The Parent Trap and 2003's Freaky Friday, was arrested in May 2007 after crashing her Mercedes in Beverly Hills.
