Why Fight for Britain? Black Soldiers 1790s to 1948
This interactive talk will use film clips, commentary and music to show what life was like in the Caribbean and how that population came to be there in the first place. It will also explain why they would want to fight and die for Britain, a country that had enslaved their ancestors. Films to be shown include Mutiny, which looks at the experience of the men of the British West Indies Regiment in Italy before and after the First World War.
These presentations are delivered in association with Black History Walks. For more information, please visit www.blackhistorywalks.co.uk/ .

From War to Windrush

Discover the stories of some of the thousands of West Indian men and women who served in the British forces and Merchant Navy during the First and Second World Wars. 60 years after the arrival of the MV Empire Windrush, explore how their wartime experiences helped shape Britain's modern West Indian populations.
Among the exhibits on display are pages from the MV Empire Windrush passenger list; the RAF flying logbook of Cy Grant, a navigator in Bomber Command, who was shot down over The Netherlands during the Second World War and spent the rest of the war in German prisoner of war camps; the MBE belonging to Sam King, who returned to Britain on the Windrush after serving in the RAF and was later the first Black mayor of Southwark; and the telegram announcing the death of Walter Tull, the first Black British Army officer.
