The time of year has come again to get your multi-coloured whistles and patriotic flags out!
Notting Hill Carnival will be bringing its popular yearly celebration into the streets of West London from the 29th to the 30th of August.
Expect a whirlwind of smells, culture, food, dance and of course a plethora of carnival music to keep you dancing on your feet all day and night.
If you’re a Notting Hill Carnival virgin (gasp!) then let Choice FM give you some information and tops tips to keep you in the know-how about this fantastic event.
-------
1. Notting Hill Carnival originated from as far back as 1964. Taking place every August Bank Holiday, the event was created to celebrate the cultures and traditions of Afro-Caribbean communities within London.
2. It usually begins on the Saturday with the steel band competition. Sunday is best to bring the little ones as its Kids' Day. This is when the costume prizes are awarded. On Bank Holiday Monday, the main parade takes place. Beginning on Great Western Road, the carnival makes its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove, and then Ladbroke Grove.
3. Expect to see a huge and exciting variety of music, including Soca & Calypso Music, Reggae, House, Mauritian Sega, Dub, R&B, Salsa and much more; including live stages with local bands, and top international artists. Past famous line ups include: Eddie Grant, Burning Spear Jamiroquai, Courtney Pine and Wyclef Jean.
4. With all that partying you’ll work up an appetite. But don’t worry as there will be hundreds of Caribbean and other international food stalls selling you the delights of jerk chicken, rice and peas, rum punch, fried plantain, curries, patties…must stop…mouth salivating…
5. BRING TRAINERS. With all that partying, dancing and walking, heels will not do you justice! Slip on your worst pair of trainers - paint them in every colour of the rainbow if you must – and you will make it until the early hours of the morning.
6. There will be over a million party revellers but don’t worry safely will be a priority for organisers.
But remember:
• Keep your valuables with you at all times; arrange your return journey before you leave the carnival.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Arrange a meeting place for you and your family so no-one gets lost.
• Keep with the flow of the crowd and be aware of pickpockets.
• If you can bring a disposable camera
• Arrive and leave early to avoid congestion
• If you see an unattended bag/package, tell a police officer or Public Safety team member immediately.
Well, I hope Choice FM has set you up for a glittering day at this year's Notting Hill Carnival.
Remember, we’ll be there so make sure you tune in on 107.1 and 96.9 fm from the 29th of August.
Happy dancing!
