IHAC volunteers help the ACLT

Saturday 26th June saw Choice FM and the ACLT charity working together to recruit new donors for the blood and bone marrow registers as part of the first ever ‘SUPER DONATION DAY’.

The day was a success and we would like to say a special thank you to all of those who braved the heat, missed the football or tennis to come down to the Choice studios to potentially save someone’s life.  It was a truly inspiring day.

IHAC and ACLT ACLT and IHAC volunteers

I have a Choice volunteers and the ACLT street team worked tirelessly all day to encourage people to come in and sign up. They all did a fantastic job!

In total 75 new potential bone marrow donors were signed up, 68 signed up to become blood donors and 50 signed up as organ donors.

Facts:

* For many people suffering with various diseases a bone marrow, blood and/or organ donation may offer the only chance of survival.

* There is a world wide shortage of donors from the Black, Mixed Raced and Asian communities.

* The chances of finding an unrelated bone marrow donor are drastically low in these communities – about one in 100,000!

* There are more than 16.9 million people on the NHS Organ Donor Register but only 1.5 per cent of these are from the Asian communities and a woeful 0.4 per cent are from the Black communities.

* There is a huge disparity between the number of Black and Asian people in need of transplants and the number of people from those communities who are willing to act as donors.

* The ACLT has set a new target to double the yearly recruitment, and aims to recruit approx. 2,000 new Black and ethnic minority donors through a new campaign launched in Feb 2010. The hard hitting campaign will build on the ACLT’s existing ‘Heroes Wanted’ Campaign and aims to inspire more people to take action today.

* Since the ACLT established 14 years ago, the ACLT have increased the number of Black and Mixed Raced potential donors on the UK bone marrow lists (Anthony Nolan Register and British Bone Marrow Registry) from approx. 580 to approx. 32, 000.

If you would like to become a donor:

* Potential bone marrow donors must be aged between 18-49 years old and in good health when registering (staying on the register until your 60th birthday).
Blood donors must be aged between 17-65 years of age and in good health.
To be an organ donor you must register your wishes to donate on the event of your passing.
